El Año 2014 en breve

Queridos amigos,  queremos poneros al día con lo que nos ha pasado en estos años.

En enero de 2012, entramos en el Cuerpo de Paz, una organización del gobierno de los EE.UU.  Nos mandaron a Panamá, donde vivimos por dos años en un pueblecito en las montañas de la provincia de Herrera.  Heather trabajó en el programa de enseñanza de inglés.  Steve trabajó en proyectos de medio ambiente, y ayudó con los ordenadores en el colegio del pueblo.

Cuando nos faltaban solo cuatro meses para terminar, en noviembre de 2013, Heather se cayó saliendo de un transporte y se le rompió la columna vertebral.  Después de unos días, la llevaron en avión a Nueva York donde se le pusieron dos barras y cuatro tornillos en la columna.

La recuperación fue dura y larga, pero Heather ha trabajado mucho. Ahora puede caminar mucho y nadar, pero no puede esquiar todavía.

Heather tuvo que llevar este soporte por tres meses.  Durante este tiempo, tenía permiso de caminar y nada más.  Como había mucha nieve, a veces necesitaba raquetas.

Mientras tanto Steve regresó a Panamá, poco después del Día de Año Nuevo para completar su servicio en el Cuerpo de Paz. Había mucho que hacer allí:  la construcción de más estufas de adobe, ayudar con la cosecha de frijol, y llevar a los niños en excursiones a las montañas.

En marzo, Heather se había recuperado lo suficiente como para hacer el viaje a Panamá. Ella fue recibido con una bienvenida cariñosa en su primer día de vuelta en la escuela.

Uno de los primeros lugares donde Heather fue fue a la celebración de la boda 50 de nuestros padres anfitriones, Arístides y Odilia. Vivíamos con ellos durante los tres primeros meses en nuestro pueblo de Chepo.

Poco después del regreso de Heather, Dave y Melissa llegaron para celebrar nuestros últimos días en  Chepo. Nos reunimos con ellos en la ciudad de Panamá para algunas actividades turísticas.

Hubo una fiesta de despedida en la escuela y David y Melissa pudieron asistir. Aquí estamos bailando en nuestra trajes tipico (Steve está en el fondo).

David y Melissa llegaron a ayudarnos a llevar otro grupo de estudiantes hasta la montaña mas alta de nuestra provincia.

También pudieron nadar en nuestra cascada favorita.

Muy pronto llegó el momento de dar una última despedida a Chepo, y luego nos dirigimos a la isla del Pacífico de Contadora para un descanso antes de que David y Melissa regresaron a los EE.UU.

Regresamos a los EE.UU. en abril, y empezamos nuestra jubilación.  En julio nos mudamos a Montpelier, Vermont.  Montpelier es la capital del estado americano más pequeño con 8000 personas. No hay ni Burger King ni McDonald's aquí! El verano es idílica aquí.

Pasamos el mes de septiembre en el pueblo de Leavenworth, en las montañas del estado de Washington, en el noroeste de los EE.UU., donde vive David. El vino a visitarnos los fines de semana. Nos llevó en un viaje de mochila a este sitio. Este fue uno de los lugares más bonitos que vimos durante todo el verano.

¡Heather sigue más fuerte que nunca!

Celebramos nuestro aniversario de boda número 40 con un viaje al lago Chelan en el este de Washington. El lago mide 80 kilómetros de largo y 400 metros de profundidad! Es literalmente un fiordo interior, formado por un glaciar.

En octubre, ya era hora de volver a Vermont para disfrutar de los colores del otoño. Aquí Heather y su amiga Bobo disfrutan de un paseo de otoño.

Ahora estamos en pleno invierno, con mucha nieve.  Aquí se ve el mismo lugar en diciembre.

A Year of Recuperation and Travel

2014 has been an eventful year for us.  The year started out with Heather wearing a body brace, recovering from her back surgery.  She broke her L4 vertebra in November of 2013, and was flown back to the US for her surgery.

 Heather spent her recuperation time with her sister Jan in Cambridge, NY, until mid-January.  By that time she was able to travel to NJ, where she stayed with her friend Marilyn in Pennington, closer to her doctors.

 The only activity Heather was cleared for was walking, and she did lots of that, even though the winter weather made it a challenge.

 Meanwhile Steve returned to Panama shortly after New Year's Day to complete his Peace Corps service.  There was lots to be done there, ranging from building more mud-brick stoves to helping with the bean harvest to taking kids on excursions to the mountains.

In March, Heather had recovered enough to make the trip to Panama.  She was greeted with a warm welcome on her first day back in school.

One of the first places Heather went was to the 50th wedding celebration of our host parents, Aristides and Odilia.  We lived with them during our first three months in Chepo.

Not long after Heather's return, Dave and Melissa arrived to celebrate our final days in our town of Chepo.  We met them in Panama City for some tourist activities.

There was a going away party in the school which Dave and Melissa were able to attend.  Here we are dancing in our tipico outfits (Steve is in the back).

Dave and Melissa got to help us lead yet another group of students up the radio tower.

They also got to swim at our favorite waterfall.

All too soon it was time to say one last goodbye to Chepo, as we headed to the Pacific isle of Contadora for some R&R before Dave and Melissa returned to the US.

In July we moved into our new apartment in Montpelier, Vermont.  Montpelier is the smallest state capital at 8000 people.  There are no McDonald's or Burger Kings here!  Summer is idyllic here.  We'll see about the winter!

In August, it was off to Seattle for some hiking and visiting friends.  Heather was getting a lot stronger, and was able to hike for several hours at a time.   Here she is with her BFF Clara overlooking the San Juan Islands.

We spent the month of September in the town of Leavenworth, on the dry side of the Cascade mountains.  Dave came to visit on weekends.  He took us on a backpacking trip to Spider Meadows and Spider Pass.  This was one of the most beautiful places we saw all summer.

One weekend were joined by our BFF's George and Lisa for a hike to Alpine Lookout.

We celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary with a trip to Lake Chelan in eastern Washington.  The lake is 50 miles long and 1400 feet deep!  It is literally an inland fjord, formed by a glacier.

In October, it was time to return to Vermont to enjoy the autumn colors.  Here Heather and her BFF Bobo enjoy a walk in a nearby abandoned quarry.

November is not so special in Vermont.  The leaves have all fallen and the snow is not here yet.  It's a good time to travel, so we decided to hit the road.  First stop was to visit our friends Beth and Joe in Memphis, where we took a tour of Sun Studios, among other places.

Then it was off to Chicago to visit Steve's brother Doug and family, followed by San Antonio where his dad, brother and sister live.  We were hoping for some warm weather in Texas, but it was actually below freezing when we were there!
